Going Forward...

Hello, and welcome to my blog. This is my first attempt at one of these, so please be gentle. I am so new at it that, just for fun, I looked up what blog stood for and learned that it was for “web log.” I promise not to begin each log entry with a star date.

Here I will be posting my musings on various and sundry topics, but mostly about writing and reading. By my yearly count I read between 45 and 55 books. I am hoping that number goes up, now that I am semi-retired. I try to shuffle genres from history to historical fiction, horror, fantasy and science fiction and then back again. For example, having just finished Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters I am now onto Nathaniel Philbrick’s Mayflower (If you have not checked out his In the Heart of the Sea, you are missing out).

I read a lot of history simply because I love it, and always have, but I tend to sometimes count it as “educational,” or I should say “vocational” now, as I am always on the lookout for obscure or little-told stories from the past. Stories that I might even expound on in a short story or – dare I say – a novel. Like most avid readers, I have a stable of favorite authors for all those genres, and I may talk about them, how they have inspired me.

I also love movies, across a variety of genres. I tried my hand at screenwriting for a time, even grazing success once or twice. Alas, in the end there was no sale, and ultimately nothing produced. Like publishing, that’s an extremely tough industry to crack. Probably the toughest, as a matter of fact, which is somewhat shocking considering the amount of dreck that Hollywood produces. So, I will occasionally be posting a film review here. I do have some limited chops in that area, as years ago I had a regular column in a newsletter for a large defense contracting firm. I had a lot of fun doing that, too. Which is good because I sure wasn’t getting paid for it.

My musings will also include what I am working on, their inspirations or planning as well as any related events. Traveling and personal experiences will be on the table as well, depending on what is happening or what has happened.
