About

In his own words:

My name is Christopher DeWitt, and I am a writer.

One thing I am very thankful for is having been born into a family of voracious readers. I have my Mom and Dad, primarily, to thank for that particular addiction. I read on the bus to work on my lunch break. Some people think that’s a little weird, and I just don’t get that. Walking through the office I see people glued to their computer screens, watching YouTube or surfing on their lunch breaks. Different strokes, I guess. But why would I want to stare at a computer screen when that is what I must do all day for work?

I started writing my first novel, Devil Preacher as a kind of therapy during COVID, and like most people, I felt trapped, bewildered and befuddled by it all. I saw someone on television talking about ways to get through the whole thing without “going off your trolley,” as Stephen King has put it. One of the ways was writing the proverbial Great American Novel. I remember grumbling back at the television, something like “Oh, yeah, because that’s so easy to do.” Something clicked right then, though. I said to myself, “Self, by God, you’re a writer! Write, for Pete’s sake!” I had mostly written screenplays in the years past, but my muse and I had developed a very estranged relationship, primarily because my “real world” work situation was sucking just about all creative impulses from me, along with my soul.

It just so happened that right around that same time I was reading an old Louis L’Amour paperback western. There was a throwaway line in it about a criminal by the name of John Murrell who had a master plan to set up his very own empire in the American South. That got my attention, as I am always on the lookout for the oddball stories that reside in the oft-forgotten nooks and crannies of history. So, I started delving into the legend of John Murrell and his Mystic Clan, and the more I delved, the more fascinating the story became. In fact, it also got to be a bit on the bizarre side, at times.

Of course, I am planning to write more books. As far as fiction genres go, my interest ranges from historical fiction to horror to science fiction, to westerns, then back again. Some of my favorite authors are Bernard Cornwell, C.S Forester, Fred Saberhagen and Rudyard Kipling, just to name a few.

I don’t know if I can ever presume to join their ranks, but it sure will be fun to give it a shot…
